Dacelo novaguineae

Common resident in woodland, forest and wooded watercourses from Cape York Peninsula, south throughout Eastern Australia to southern South Australia, introduced to Western Australia and Tasmania. Jointly maintaining a territory in small groups which co-operate in raising young. Loud chuckling laugh often in chorus, usually heard at their strongest in the early morning and at sunset. Food Source Small reptiles( incl. snakes up to a metre in length) insects and fish. Nesting between September to December, in a hollow in a tree or more rarely, tunnel in arboreal termite mound.
